EPA studies find air inside the average home is typically 2-5 times more polluted than the outside air. A five-year study found levels 70 times higher than they were outdoors. Another found concentrations of 20 toxic chemicals 200-500 times higher inside than outside. The Consumer Products Safety Commission found that outdoor air contains an average of less than 10 VOCs, while indoor air contained approximately 150.
WHERE DO THESE POISONS COME FROM?
Indoor pollutants come from paints, stains, building materials, plastics, furniture, cabinets, appliances, household cleaning products, electronics (home entertainment systems, computers, etc.) and even our clothing. We are filling ever 'tighter' homes with ever more sources of incredibly dangerous chemicals that continue to off-gas for up to five years.
There are simple, common-sense measures anyone can take to reduce levels of indoor air pollution. Leaving windows open, having lots of green house plants and using an air purifier will help, but reducing the sources of the poisons is the only sensible long term solution.
As for our part, we will do the best we can to help by using natural fibers, colors and paints to eliminate a major source dangerous chemicals in your home. The rest is up to you.
There is a wealth of information about how to identify, reduce or eliminate specific sources of hazardous chemicals available on the internet, in your local library or even on product labels.
